It All Begins with a DD 214
What is a DD214?
A DD214 is a Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty that serves as the official, authoritative record of military service, detailing service dates, awards, rank, and character of discharge.
How Do I Get a DD214?
- The VA website provides information and resources for obtaining a copy of the DD214 online or by mail. Online requests require an id.me account. (id.me requires the ability to scan a photo id and a device with a camera).
- Your Veteran Service Officer can request these records on your behalf.
- The same procedures apply for a veteran, veteran dependents and survivors
