What is a DD214?

A DD214 is a Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty that serves as the official, authoritative record of military service, detailing service dates, awards, rank, and character of discharge.

  • The VA website provides information and resources for obtaining a copy of the DD214 online or by mail. Online requests require an id.me account.  (id.me requires the ability to scan a photo id and a device with a camera).
  • Your Veteran Service Officer can request these records on your behalf.
  • The same procedures apply for a veteran, veteran dependents and survivors
